What is an inert material?

An inert material is an inactive substance, in which nothing will react with it, within the environment of the materials designed use. There will be no outgassing, no corrosion, and no change of the material into something it's not designed to change into. In order to classify a material as inert, one needs to consider the materials' environment of use. For example, the 'hot zone' of our desktop vaporizer apparatus, where temperatures can reach over 1400°F, we exclusively feature inert materials, ceramic (alumina oxide) and borosilicate glass. In the dry herb vaporization zone, where temperatures can reach ~421°F, we exclusively feature inert materials silicone and titanium. In a vaporizer apparatus, the materials must also be designed for use, to not react with the different plant materials being vaporized. The Desktop Pro sets these market standards by putting this goal at the forefront of our design.

What is Borosilicate Glass?

Borosilicate glass is a glass that contains boron trioxide allowing for an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion. An extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion means under extreme temperature fluctuations it will not crack like regular glass. Its stability and strength have made it the glass of choice for high heat applications, like the convection chamber of a vaporizer.

What is borosilicate glass heater cover?

A Borosilicate Glass Heat Cover is the type of glass used for the heater cover on the Desktop Pro & Desktop Pro Elite Vaporizers to ensure optimal temperature for all day use.

What is a Poly-carbonate Shield?

Poly-carbonate is a robust, transparent plastic material with exceptional impact resistance, stiffness, and strength.  A Poly-Carbonate Heat Shield is used on the Desktop Pro Vaporizer to protect the user from the hot heater cover during use, and to channel the cooling cooling air.

How do I decide which vaporizer to buy?

Choosing a vaporizer can be a big decision, especially if you don't have the budget to buy and try multiple vaporizers. Choosing the right vaporizer the first time, matters. Onsen Labs understands this challenge, which is why no matter which Onsen Labs vaporizer you choose, you can come back at a later date and buy the parts to swap out or upgrade your version. But in the mean time here is a product comparison chart between the Desktop Pro and the Desktop Pro Elite Vaporizers to help you make your decision.

What is a whip style desktop dry herb vaporizer?

Whip-style dry herb vaporizers are tabletop vaporizers that heat the dry herb through convection and employ a “whip” attachment as their method of inhaling the vapor. A whip, like the Onsen Labs Titanium Screen Whip Assembly is made up of three main parts - the wand (glass piece where the dry herb is loaded), the tubing (silicone recommended) and the mouthpiece.

How to disassemble a wand and whip for cleaning?

To disassemble a wand and whip for cleaning or servicing:

  1. Read the user manual for safety instructions.
  2. Remove all debris from the wand near the screen.
  3. Hold the wand and the silicon hose while pulling and twisting the wand and hose apart. Be careful not to let the mouthpiece fly free during this process as it may hit and break something.
  4. Follow the same process to disassemble the mouthpiece from the whip.  If the silicone is old and difficult to remove from the mouthpiece, you may have to cut off as little as necessary.
  5. Now that the wand is free, use the Onsen Labs PIC Tool to push or pull the filter out.

To reassemble silicone hose, wet lightly to lubricate for installation.

How to clean a desktop dry herb vaporizer?

Items you will need to clean a desktop dry herb vaporizer:

Parts cleanable by this method: Heater Cover and Wand & Whip assembly.
  1. Read the Desktop Pro user manual for safety instructions. Then, follow the instructions “How to disassemble a wand and whip for cleaning”.
  2. Follow all safety and use instructions for handling, use and storage of isopropyl alcohol by the manufacturer.
  3. Next, put on your chemical resistant gloves and eye protection.
  4. Place your wood or plastic bowl in a sink or over a drain.
  5. With your bowl in the sink, place a small amount of IPA and table salt in the bowl and use the brush to clean each component. Try to get salt worked into the bristles of the brush for better cleaning action.
For the hard to reach spots, cover bottom hole of the part with fingers, fill the components halfway with alcohol and salt, cover the remaining holes with fingers and gently shake to use the salt to agitate and scrub debris from the part walls.
  6. Once you finish cleaning with the brush and salt/alcohol mix, rinse each component with water before letting parts sit to dry on paper towel.

If herbal contaminants come into contact with the element, you can sterilize the element by simply turning the unit on to full power for 10 minutes and the temperatures reached will burn off herbal contaminants.

How to install a screen in the wand?

To install a screen on a dry herb desktop vaporizer:
  1. Use extra included Grade 2 Titanium ⅝” Screens.
  2. Gently bend the screen like you would hold a taco, as minimal as necessary in order to slide it into the tapered end of the glass wand. Push it as far as you can with your finger.
  3. Use the included Onsen Labs PIC Tool to slide the screen down and push around all edges of the screen, so that it gets caught on the inside lip.
  4. Once in place, the screen should sit concave or rounded bent inward towards the silicone tube end of the wand, in order to be stuck in place. If your screen doesn’t fit, please check to make sure you’ve purchased the correct Onsen Labs replacement screens size.

How to store my dry herb vaporizer?

Desktop dry herb vaporizers should be stored in a clean, dry environment in a locking bag, like the Onsen Labs Carbon Smell Absorbing Bag, out of reach of children and pets.
  1. To store the device, wait at least one hour to cool with the power off and the cord unplugged
  2. Carefully wrap the wand and whip assembly into a double loop, secure the hook and loop straps and store in the Carbon Smell bag or a sanitary zip-lock bag.
  3. Place the device in the large storage area of the bag, making sure to zip closed and secure the zipper locks.

How to remove the glass heat cover?

To remove the glass heat cover on a desktop dry herb vaporizer:
  1. Be sure the device is powered off, unplugged, and has had at least one (1) hour to cool.
  2. Read user manual for safety instructions.
  3. Place the device on a work surface in which you have enough elbow room.
  4. Turn the heater cover 90 degrees.
  5. Use both hands, fingers extended, to reach as far down the heater cover as possible.
  6. Apply slow, controlled, and direct upward pressure on the heater cover, only sliding it up 1 mm at a time, and then re-adjusting your grip and repeating.  Slight twisting may also help.
*Do not carelessly rip the heater cover off. Pulling off too hard or too fast may result with damage to the element.

Be sure not to touch or bump the ceramic heating element while the glass heater cover is removed. If you do accidentally, turn the element on full power for 10 minutes to sterilize the element.

How to replace the glass heater cover seals?

It is unnecessary to replace your glass cover seals unless you damage one or it’s the first time you are installing a new heater cover.
To replace the Glass Heater Cover Seals on the Desktop Pro Vaporizer:
  1. Turn the vaporizer off and unplug to allow at least one (1) hour for cooling.
  2. Read the user manual for safety warnings.
  3. Follow the instructions to remove the glass heater cover.
  4. Next, using the Onsen Labs PIC Tool, carefully find the area where the seal is split on an angle in two and separate the old seal until it falls free of its groove.
  5. Now remove the second seal.
  6. Install the replacement seals by carefully sliding them over the element and into their grooves, being careful not to touch the element.
  7. Install the bottom seal first.  Do not overstretch the seals as they are delicate and once stretched;they do not shrink to their original shape on their own, without re-bending them back into shape. When sliding the bottom seal on first, be careful not to let it get caught in the top seal groove.
  8. Slide on the top seal. If you do this out of order, the bottom seal will need to be overstretched in order to pass the top seal. If you overstretch the seal, remove and bend to shape, then try again.
  9. Once both seals are set in place and not overstretched, use a hairdryer to apply heat to the heater cover for 30-60 seconds; warming the base opening of the glass heater cover will help the seals conform to the various tolerances of each individually handmade glass heater cover.
  10. Use an oven glove if necessary, and slowly and evenly press the heater cover over the first seal, then very slightly rotating the heat cover on a very slight angle back and forth as you push down. The rotating angle will inch the cover downward into place. Do not force this fast; the heat is required to transfer from the heater cover and conform the new seals. While doing this, also carefully guide the heater element through the center of the narrow inner glass heater cover, being sure not to hit the ceramic on the glass. Continue to push until the heater cover is almost touching the bottom white base. Use alcohol wipes to sanitize the heater cover for when bare hands touch it.
  11. Once the heater cover is cooled and installed with new seals, we need to do one final step; slowly pull it back off, just partially in order to dislodge any sealed bond between the seal and heater cover, so that it removes easily for future servicing.
  12. Then press back on firmly. From here, future removal is easy, as the new seals are now fitted to your specific glass heater cover.

Before sliding the glass heater cover over the base, take note of the heater element and its close fit between the inner hole within the glass heater cover. The element should not touch the glass heater cover.

Do Not Force the heater cover, it should gently slide with firm pressure.

How to Install The Glass Heater Cover?

To install a new glass heater cover on a desktop dry herb vaporizer:
  1. Thoroughly inspect the glass heater cover and follow cleaning instructions if required.
  2. Check the glass heater cover seals to ensure they are fully mounted within their grooves. If the glass heater cover seals are damaged or will not fit within their grooves, please follow the instructions to replace them by clicking here. You are now ready to install the glass heater cover.
  3. Place your dry herb Desktop Pro Vaporizer on a work surface in which you can situate yourself above the device with elbow room.
  4. Use a hairdryer to warm the base opening of the glass heater cover. Apply heat for 30-60 seconds. The heated glass will help the seals conform to the various tolerances of each individually handmade glass heater cover.
Before sliding the glass heater cover over the base, take note of the heater element and its close fit between the inner hole within the glass heater cover. Do Not Force the heater cover, it should gently slide with firm pressure.
  5. Use an oven glove if necessary, slowly and evenly press the heater cover over the first seal, then very slightly rotating the heat cover on a very slight angle back and forth as you push down. The rotating angle will inch the cover downward into place. Do not force this fast; the heat is required to transfer from the heater cover and conform the new seals.
While guiding the heat cover onto the seals, also carefully guide the heater element through the center inner glass heat cover opening, being sure NOT to hit the ceramic on the glass. This is a delicate process.
  6. Once the heater cover is cooled and installed with seals, we need to do one final step; slowly pull it back off, just partially in order to dislodge any melted bond between the seal and heater cover.
  7. Press back on firmly. From here, future removal is easy, as the new seals are now fitted to your specific glass heater cover.
